How to add Organization and WebSite structured data

Organization and WebSite structured data identify who publishes the site, and Article or Product adds page-level context. Add them as JSON-LD with your name, url, logo and sameAs profiles, then validate the markup in a testing tool before you publish it.

How do you fix it?

  1. Add a JSON-LD script to the home page with @type Organization, name, url, logo and a sameAs list of official profiles.
  2. Add a WebSite object with name and url (and a SearchAction if your site has search).
  3. On inner pages add Article, Product or another type that fits, including author and dates.
  4. Use the same brand name in every object, the title tags and og:site_name.
  5. Validate with the Rich Results Test, then re-run the audit.

What is structured data?

Structured data is a standard way to label the facts on a page, such as the publisher, the product or the article date, using the Schema.org vocabulary, usually written as JSON-LD. Engines read it to understand the entities on a page without guessing. Core schema, meaning Organization and WebSite, answers the first question any engine has: who runs this site? The JSON-LD format has been a W3C Recommendation since 2014, and a minimal Organization needs only 3 properties: name, url and logo.

What should the core markup include?

For Organization: name, url, a logo URL, and a sameAs array that links to your official profiles. For WebSite: name and url. Then add a page-level type on each page, such as Article with headline, author, datePublished and dateModified. Keep all values truthful and the same as the visible page. Errors are common in copied snippets, so run each template through the validator once, and again after redesigns that change the head or the footer.

What else do people ask?

Where should the Organization markup go?
On the home page at least. You may repeat a short reference on other pages, but one complete block on the home page is enough.
Do I need to be a large company?
No. Any person or business can use Organization or Person markup. It simply states who you are in a form engines can read.
